Firefighters in Springfield Township, Cincinnati had an unusual rescue call on Friday, nine ducklings had fallen through a sewer grate.
A worker at Brookdale Place Assisted Living, who had been feeding the ducks, noticed that some of them had fallen into the sewer and ran to the fire station across the street for help.
"We noticed the duck, the mother duckling was circling around the manhole," said Annetta Barnes, who took pictures of the rescue.
When the firefighters arrived at the senior retirement center they found the mother duck and two ducklings waiting next to the sewer grate.
The firefighters were using water to try and flush the small ducklings up to a point where they could be reached and rescued.
"As they were coming out, the guy was just reaching them out one by one, one bye one rescuing them," Barnes said.
When all but two of the ducklings were rescued, the firefighters were called away on another rescue call. When they returned they went back to the sewer to finish the duckling rescue.
All the ducklings were recovered and reunited with their mother.
