Gloucester, better known as “G” to his owners, the Meyers family, used up one of his nine lives by surviving a 20 floor fall out of an open apartment window, landing on the pavement below, and walking away (not literally) with no broken bones and just some bumps and bruises.

On July 4th, while in Cape Cod with his family on vacation, Myers got a call from his neighbor who had come by to feed Gloucester. "She didn't see him anywhere in his usual nooks and crannies, and after searching the entire apartment she noticed the crack in the window," Barry Meyers said.

Meanwhile, down in the courtyard, a security guard and another tenant had already discovered Gloucester.

Gloucester was brought to the vet and was in the ICU for several days. Neurological exams showed no signs of damage, and no internal bleeding was found either.

“We feel very lucky and grateful. The vet told us that when a cat falls from ten floors or fewer, they have less of a chance for survival because they don't have enough time to right their body before impact. We were told there was a cat who fell 32 floors and survived,” said Myers. “They told me that he was a miracle.”

The Myers have had “G” since Barry Myers found and rescued him and his two brothers in an abandoned building 16 years ago.

The family left a window cracked open in their New York apartment when they left for a long weekend, thinking the cat wouldn't notice.

“In all the years we’ve been here, he’s never even looked at the window, let alone peeked his head out or anything,” Myers said. “I assume he saw something and leaned out and tried to take a swing at it.”

Gloucester, now refered to as "Super G" by Meyers, came home Monday night. "He's still a little wobbly because he took a hit on the noggin," says Myers.

The vet expects Gloucester to be okay.

Pet experts say that you should not leave unscreened windows open more than a inch. For more on information on "high rise syndrome" check out the The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

  1. I guess cats only land on their feet if they fall from high enough.

  2. That cat is lucky considering how old he is (more than 16 years old).
